Chapter 2: Oscillators

1.Define an Oscillator and explain its basic sections. (3 Marks)

  • Definition: An electronic circuit that converts DC power to AC power at a desired frequency without an external input signal.

  • Oscillatory Circuit: A tuned circuit (LC, RC, or Crystal) that produces small AC oscillations from a DC supply.

  • Amplifier & Feedback: The amplifier strengthens oscillations, and a positive feedback network returns a portion of the output in phase with the input to sustain oscillations.

2. Explain the working and property of a Crystal Oscillator. (3 Marks)

  • Piezoelectric Effect: Uses quartz crystals that vibrate when AC voltage is applied.

  • Frequency: The oscillation frequency is determined by the crystal's own natural frequency.

  • Stability: Known for providing a highly stable frequency output.

3. Describe the Astable Multivibrator circuit. (4 Marks)

  • Nature: A non-sinusoidal, free-running oscillator with no stable states.

  • Operation: Uses two identical transistors connected back-to-back that alternately switch ON and OFF.

  • Output: Generates a continuous square wave output without any external input signal
